This homemade costume for boys entered our 2012 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Shana, the 'Tow Mater' costume creator:

My 3 year old son dressed as Tow Mater from the Cars movies. We decided to go with the Mater costume because everybody wants to be Lighting McQueen. I made it from a large box I picked up from work, several cans of spray paint in a variety of colors and some packaging paper. I also used my Cricut to cut out letters and circles for details.

Sorry, just now getting back. I used a large box and cut it then wrapped packing paper around it. I painted it with several different colors tan, blue,&' brown of spray paint. I cut the letters out on my circuit then glued them on. I used a toy Tow Mater as reference to cut the box. I did use a lot of hot glue and tape which can't be seen.

So, I looked at a Tow-Mater toy & several images online to get the placement of the lettering, which I cut out using my Cricut, the tow bar, lights and other details. I used a big cardboard box, glued some empty paper towel rolls to it for the curves and covered it in brown packing paper. The. I used a light tan, blue, brown and light blue-green spray paint to get the colors correct. I covered styrofoam for the light on top with scrapbook paper, for the tag I found a copy of it on line then, used an embossing tool to raise the letters off the paper and brushed over it to give it "metal tag" appearance. For the straps to hold it on we purchased webbing from the hardware store with the plastic buckles. I also got rope like string from the hardware store for the tow cable. Hope this helps.
