Costume type:  Costumes for Kids
Category:Halloween Costumes

This homemade costume for kids entered our 2012 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Sarah, the 'Lucky Charms' costume creator:

My four children are wearing the costumes. This year's "theme" stemmed from reusing the pot from last year's flower theme.

Box of Lucky Charms:
Cardboard box
spray paint
acrylic paint
graphics printed from computer
sharpie marker
***COST= Free since I had all the supplies from other crafts.
***Directions
Cut open box to allow child to walk. Cut holes in the top and sides for head and arms. Spray painted the box red. Painted letters and nutritional panel. Glued computer printouts on box.

Rainbow:
7 rainbow scraps of fabric
1 1/2 yards of white felt (.30 on sale)
plastic grocery bags
***Cost free other than the felt
***Directions: Traced semi-circles on fabric in the shape of a rainbow. Sewed them to the felt that I had cut to look like a cloud. Stuffed the cloud part with the plastic grocery bags.

Pot of Gold:
1 large flower pot
newspaper
balloons
ribbon (was on the pot from a previous costume)
gold and black spray paint
Flour (to make paper mache)
rubber band
1 toothpick
**** Cost $1.00 for the package of balloons)
**** Directions: Cut the bottom of the flower pot. Drill holes to thread the ribbon through to make suspenders. Spray the pot black if it's not black already. Blow up several balloons and tie together. Paper mache the top to make it look like a mound of gold. Once dry (2 days and several layers of newspaper), cut a hole for the head (save the head piece to make a hat)and the spray paint gold. The cut piece spray gold too. Cut the rubber band so you have one long stretchy string. Poke 2 holes in the hat so you can thread the rubber band through. Take the toothpick and break it in half and tie the ends of the rubber band so the rubber band doesn't slip through the holes.

Red Balloon:
1 1/2 yards of shiny red material (2.00 on sale)
One large outside ball or exercise ball
newspaper
Flour (paper mache)
rubber band
white curling ribbon
glue
empty tape roll
Cost: Free other than the material I had on hand.
Directions:
Place ball on an empty tape roll. Paper mache the top half of the ball. Once it's dry, cut a viewing hole. Cover the half-sphere with the red fabric and cut the fabric from the viewing hole. Glue the fabric to the half-sphere to keep it from sliding. While the sphere is on the child's head gather the fabric to look like the end of a balloon. Fasten with rubber band, tie off with white curling ribbo
