This homemade costume for women entered our 2012 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Kaity, the 'Leg Lamp' costume creator:

I was the infamous Leg Lamp from the film, "A Christmas Story." Christmas and Halloween are my two favorite holidays, so I wanted to combine them together while adding a bit of an untraditional/unique characteristic to it: the lampshade actually lights up!

I bought a cheap lampshade from Walmart, cut out the middle support system, cut a slit down the back and hot glued black fringe to the bottom. I also bought a pack of battery-powered lights and safety pinned them to my clothing underneath the shade so it was illuminated.

I slipped the shade around my waist over previous owned items: a black v-neck, black yoga shorts, black fishnet tights and black pumps.

The total cost of this costume was around $13, and it was a HUGE hit at the Halloween parties I attended!

How did you fasten the back???

Hi Kerry! I actually didn't - I left it open. There was probably a 4-inch gap. However, I sewed a cream colored fabric onto the gap to cover it. I was also wearing black yoga shorts underneath in case anything popped open! :)

Where'd you buy the fringes? Could I just make one?
