A word from Kira, the 'Awesome Robot' costume creator:

My 3 year old son, Ayden, is wearing a homemade robot costume. He thought of the idea of being a robot on his own and I let my imagination go wild from there. I found an awesome fabric that had a aluminum foil/metal look to it but was actually extremely soft. I used the fabric to make pants for him. I also made sleeves that I sewed onto one of his t-shirts. For his feet I took old shoe boxes of his and left the bottoms open and cut holes in the top big enough for his feet to go through. I covered the boxes in the fabric as well. I added some blinking red lights to the front of the boxes also for some effects. For his body I took a cardboard box that fit his torso pretty well and covered that in the same fabric. I left one side open for his legs and cut a head hole and arm holes. For the lights on the front I got a battery powered set of 20 white christmas lights that had flat bulbs instead of pointed and poked them through the front of the box. I used duct tape on the inside of the box to hold the lights and wires in place. For his dials I took construction paper and cut it into circles and added pipe cleaners around the edge of them and bent them to look like gauges. We made a battery gauge, oil gauge, laser beam gauge and candy gauge. After I put all that together I wrapped each gauge in saran wrap to give them a glass look. For his head I made a form fitting hoodie with longer fabric around the neck that I tucked into the neck of the box for his body. I attached a clasp under his chin to keep it on. For his antenna I poked each side of a pipe cleaner through the hood and curled the edges and then took another one and squiggled it between the two sides poking up. For a final touch I attached small pieces of looped fabric to all the corners of the body box and shoe covers and attached some glow sticks that were bracelet sized. It turned out awesome! Every house we went to thought it was the best costume of the night! It was hard to take a really good picture though because it was hard for him to sit still long enough to get one. He is 3 after all! :)
