Cheap Halloween Costumes: To Buy or to Hand-make?

Every year when summer comes to a close and fall approaches, the next entertaining holiday is Halloween, and that means costumes. Whether you're going to a Halloween party, taking children trick-or-treating, competing in a Halloween costume contest, or creating costumes for a parade, time and money becomes a crucial deal breaker when it comes to choice of costumes. Cheap Halloween costumes can be great, but what if their quality is less than expected? Can affordable Halloween costumes be made a home? The answer is yes, but there are some things to consider before deciding.

Have you ever come up with a perfect Halloween costume idea and came to found it to be outrageous at the Halloween super stores? Many prefer making their own costumes to purchasing them due to the amount of money they save. Halloween costumes often require a lot of accessories as well and may only be worn once, so searching for affordable and creative Halloween costumes becomes a difficult task.

What are the pros of hand-making a costume yourself?

Here's a few:

  • If you're already good at making costumes and have the skill of making things from scratch, then perhaps the costume you create would be more durable than the thin, easily torn costumes bought at Halloween superstores.

  • Creating memories! By creating the costume yourself and using your own creativity, you can pass it to other family members or even make it with your family and reap the memories of the experience forever.

  • Most importantly – save money. If you want a costume that is highly popular that particular year, buying it from a store can take a lot of your wallet. Many people who are looking for affordable Halloween costumes resort to creating it themselves, often saving between $30 and $60!

And the pros of store bought costumes?

  • Ease of access. Normally, several weeks before Halloween arrives tons of empty outlet malls and stores open and the banner "Halloween Super Store" is advertised everywhere. If you're busy and lack the time to create a handmade Halloween costume, then buying one may be the better option.

  • If you're a parent to little ones, they are often very particular on the character or princess they want to be and it may not be something you're able to create yourself. Store-bought children costumes are usually cheap Halloween costumes and offer a huge variety of costumes.

So which is the better option?

It depends on your situation. Purchasing store-bought costumes are not the cheap Halloween costumes, but they do offer a wide variety of characters and options. Creative Halloween costumes, however, are what make Halloween one of the most exciting holidays of the year, so if you're skillful, perhaps a homemade Halloween costume would be your best bet. If you're looking for affordable Halloween costumes, it's probably best to go with the homemade option if you have the abilities.
