A word from Stephanie, the 'Marvin the Martian' costume creator:

Marvin the Martian...I used a exercise ball and covered it with 6 layers of paper mache leaving an opening at least the size of my head near the plug. My paper mache recipe was elmers glue, water, and flour. I didnt measure. I just poured it in until it looked like pancake batter. Once it was complete dry i cut out two large ovals and covered his face with black felt. I found plastic mesh at joann fabrics that you could see through one direction. Using foam board (like poster board but has foam backing. I made a template for his visor and bottom of his helmet. I scored the board every inch so it would bend around the head. I then covered the rest of his head with green felt making sure to stretch. It and pull all wrinkles and gathers near the edge to be hidden by the visor and bottom of shield. I hot glue plastic mesh inside for the eyes and added the visor and helmet piece. I bought a wallpaper brush and hot glued it to the top of his head. The green skirt was also made of foam board. I cut triangles and covered the in green felt. I then cut a donut shape circle fromthe board and attached the triangles to itto help supports them. I found one piece red long johns at walmart. Inside the head I glued a large styrofoam block and added a bicycle helmet. The costume was a big hit and was comfortable to wear. Dont forget to buy a cool laser gun!

how did you make the shoes?

#2 comment by Stephanie September 18, 2015

Hi, I used foarm board and made a very large sole. Centered a pair of old sneakers and duct taped them like crazy to the board. Making sure to be able to still get the foot inside. Then with trial and error made felt covers leaving bottom opened. Basically two pieces that looked like a profile of a shoe sewed down front and back. Sliped it over the sneaker. The hot glued the edge under the foam board. To keep from getting destroyed when walking I covered the sole with a few layers of duct tape. i stuffed the inside off the shoe with stuffing to keep the shape. Hope this helps a little. The picture above doesnt show the finished shoe and Im not sure how to add it. :(

How did you attach the triangles to the waist piece?

#4 comment by Stephanie colvin October 24, 2015

I made the triangles individually. Covered them in green felt. Made a donut shape out of the foam with slit the back to be able to put it on around waist. covered that in felt. Hot glued the triangles to donut shape. Hope that made sense

How did you center and attach the helmet inside the head?

#6 comment by Stephanie Colvin September 30, 2017

put the helmet on your head with hot glue then put head on. Wait until glue dries and pull entire head off. add more glue to the area

Do you know the diameter of the ball you used for paper mache?

#8 comment by stephanie colvin October 2, 2017

I dont. It was a standard exercise ball.

Do you by chance still have the template you used for the helmet and the skirt?

#10 comment by Stephanie October 18, 2019

I don't. I just made a triangle and cut the top point off. Trial and error until I found the size I wanted. After all said and done the skirt was too big and two overlapped in the back.

So you did the same with the helmet?

#12 comment by Stephanie colvin October 19, 2019

Ya it was just trial and error. I used some big paper and kept trying it out until I thought it looked right then traced it onto the foam board.
