This homemade costume for pets entered our 2017 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Catherine, the 'Canine Justice League' costume creator:

This year my dogs are the Canine Justice League. I watch a lot of the superhero tv series. I got hooked on watching Arrow first and I was determined that one of my pups would be him for Halloween. After that, I started to expand to the other Justice League members. All the pups in the collage are seniors and were adopted by me. Seniors are so often overlooked and they really are the best! Some had a rough life before being adopted and others have been with me their entire life. Chase and Cody are used to all the Halloween fuss but its new to some of the others. Halloween is our favorite time a year!

Top Row Left to Right

*Kaydence is Wonder Woman. She is my 9 year old rescue from the local animal control. She had been found on the side of the road in a bowling bag. I fostered her for awhile for a rescue that I volunteer for and decided she already found her home. It was with me. I made her skirt myself with material and items I had laying around the house or that was given to me. Material was given to me from a friend, the belt was ribbon and the star was felt. The rope I had and painted it and then glued it to the skirt so it wouldn't get lost. Her shirt I got from a thrift store and then glued on the Wonder Woman patch. Cost: $6 since I only had to buy the shirt for $1 at the thrift store and $5 for the Wonder Woman patch.

*Cody is Green Arrow. Cody is always a good sport at Halloween. I have had him since he was a puppy and he is 10 years old now.I adopted him from a rescue shelter. I bought the jacket he is wearing but altered it to fit him and added our own special touches. The arrows I made myself. They are doll rods that I glued feathers too. The feathers were brown originally so I painted them green instead. The hood on his jacket I made out of the pants they shipped with the jacket since I didnt have any use for the pants. Cost: $83 - Costume $57, doll rods $4 feathers $10 fake bullets $10 paint $2

*Malikai is Batman. He is my 12 year old rescue from the local animal control. His shirt is a toddler shirt that I sewed a Batman bib to that I found at the craft store. I made the cape myself with satin material and a yellow shirt that I cut up for the underside. Then my friend graciously bought us the Batmobile. The "road" he is sitting on is Styrofoam that I painted silver and attached it to our wagon to pull him around. He has difficulty walking so this was perfect for him. Cost: $55 (Shirt $2, bib $8, bat mobile $40 Batman patch $5 cape $0 since I had material at home)

Bottom Row Left to Right
Natassa is Supergirl. She is about 9 years old. I adopted her from a rescue about an hour away from me. She had been picked up as a stray. Cost: Purchased on line for $13

Ollie is Hawkman. I adopted him through the rescue I volunteer with. His former owner had become ill and had to surrender his pups before passing away. I fell in love with him as soon as I saw him. Ollie is about 8 years old. I made his costume except for the wings. The vest was a womans coat I found at the thrift store. I cut the arms off and altered it to fit him. Next I cut up and attached a mens belt. The symbol in the center I painted on to a piece of wood I got at the craft store. The mace I also made and painted myself. The mace is a painted doll rod with a styrofoam ball at the top with craft sticks that I painted and attached. Note, dont use a hot glue gun or super glue when using foam because it ruins the styrofoam. Found E6000 glue to be much easier to work with. Cost: $25 (Jacket $8, wood $6, foam Ball $2, paint $2, wings $7)

Chase is Green Lantern. Chase just turned 9 on 10/19. I have had him since he was a puppy. Worked out great that his birthday is so close to Halloween and he seems to love to show off his costumes every year. He is becoming a Halloween pro! I bought a child's costume and altered to fit him. The little lantern I bought and painted green. Cost: $15

I made a collage with the photos and also included individual photos of each one but they all belong to the same group.
