A word from Shelley, the 'Blasting Off with a Jet Pack' costume creator:

I am wearing the costume. The costume idea came from researching different ideas. I had to have something that really made up for the years of just figuring something out last minute! I wanted people to be able to tell that I put a lot of work into it.
How to instructions: what I did was start with the wearable flames.. I went to the thrift store and found fabric that I could use to create flames. This was really difficult because I was building from scratch. It would have been easier if I went to a party store and purchased red and orange boas but I could not find any in my local stores.
I started compiling and layering these together. I came up with a rough draft. I did this as I went because I was on a budget so I really tried to get the materials that I needed and use them! This was $11 because the thrift store had a half off purple tagged clothing deal that week so I selected all purple tag items.
I used came up with a rough skirt made of layers and then tore small pieces of fabric to add as extra flames. Red pants were worn underneath.
I tried using a needle to see but it actually bent so I abandoned that and started using hot glue to glue more fabric to myself. Stuffing pants didn’t take long but I had to redo them with plastic bags so it wasn’t too heavy.
Went to Home Depot to buy concrete mold form and had a buddy there help me cut it in half. This was for jet pack. Also grabbed metallic paint. $11 total
Lots of hidden strings and hot glue basically held these things together. And lots of safety pins. Clothes I had and was okay with gluing them And cutting up. Bought some streamers and a table cloth that I cut in shreds for more texture. Glued lots of flame material to the underside of the hoodie too.
Excited for next year!
