A word from Lindsie, the 'Black Widow attacks Hoverfly' costume creator:
This costume was a paired costume. We are both students as well and researchers in an entomology lab. We wanted to do something that reflected our love a research. Cat ( the back widow) does most of her work on spiders and I do most of my work on bees and other pollinators. The black widow costume was designed and made by me. Although black widow have a red hour glass this is a feminine interpretation of the black widow. The black widow's thorax was made out of an long sleeve t-shirt with satin arms sewed together with a pattern I made. The abdomen was made out of sparkly tulle tied together on elastic to give the skirt look. My costume the hover fly was bought and then added some own personal touches. Although this costume was sold as a bee costume it's taxonomically incorrect. Bee's have 2 set of wings and there for I am a bee fly mimic (also known as a hoverfly). We then added spider webbing to make it look like I was trapped in her web and our costume was born.
