Mardi Gras Costumes

Mardi Gras, Feburary 5th this year is the day before Ash Wednesday ( which begins the fasting of "Lent" in some religons ), and is also called "Shrove Tuesday" or "Pancake Day". Mardi Gras came to New Orleans through it's French heritage WAY back in 1699 when they had great celebrations along the banks of the Mississippi River.

Purple, Green and Gold are the official colors of Mardi Gras. The colors were chosen back in 1872 by the King of Carnival, Rex. The colors each symbolize something:

Purple represents justice.
Green represents faith.

Gold represents power.

One of the biggest traditions are the "throws". That is , persons participating in the parade( riding a float).... or otherwise enjoying the party event in the street....throw bead necklaces, or doubloons, and/or "trinkets" (a TRINKET can be anything thrown from a float such as candy, stuffed animals, roses,etc. Ü) to other party goers or onlookers along balconies or walkways. Throwing (OR CATCHING) these things are a MUST during the party and parade so be prepared!
